Origin: Peru: South Coast, Ica Valley, Inca Period A.D. 1420-1540. A long tradition of carving guardian or ancestor figures in wood exists along the Peruvian Coast. Research showed that they originated in the Ica Valley, but their date was a mystery until radiocarbon tests were done. The research showed that they were part of a complex of 240 posts set into an earthen platform near the site of Caluachi, a pilgrimage center in the Paracas Peninsula near the Nasca Lines. Originals may be seen at the Dallas Museum of Art and the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. Size:15x33x4 boxed. Done in predominantly black with highlighted dichroic and trim pieces.
