Origin: Zaire. This mask was used as a box lid and was usually carved by the Kuba people. The box was used for personal belongings, especially a red powder they used as a cosmetic. The basic form is one in which the shape of the box itself is the outline of a face with flat-topped coiffure. Size 11x16 on 8x8 Plexiglas stand. This mask would really look great with transmitted light and reflective light. It is done in a irridized translucent blue with the edges done in a teal/blue dichroic glass. This color really shifts with the angle it is viewed. I have accented this mask with slight touches of black , gray and red.
